what causes all puppies born to a dalmatian mom to die within the first day of birth?
Sanda P asked:
the first one was dead at birth. the two others left seem healthy at first and eager to nurse from their mother. but a little later they seem to weaken. we found the second one dead when we woke up in the morning. the third one died around afternoon. what may be the most probable cause, coz i don’t want it to happen next time. by the way there are only 3 of them.

You should ask your mentor or vet that question! Next time you should get your dog spayed!

Yes Check With Your vet and get her Neuted!

This needs to be discussed with your vet before you breed with her again in case there is something inherent happening.

Next time??????
You need to get the mother and pups to a vet for an educated guess at what happened and you need to get out of the back yard breeder business.
Get that poor dog spayed.

You need to take the mother dog to the vet. If you have the bodies of the dead puppies you can take them too. Have the dogs examined.
Only a vet can give you an exact answer. There are many reasons that puppies die at birth. Maybe there was something wrong in the whole pregnancy thing going on. Maybe they had some type of disease. Maybe the mother failed to nurse or take care of them properly. (some mother dogs just don’t know how to care for puppies.)

Check with your vet.
When your dog is pregnant, you need to take her to the vet so your vet can monitor the puppies, and give you tips so you can make your puppies be born strong and healthy.

Infection carried by the mother, an STD carried by the Dam, Congenital defects you did not pick up on.
Not getting the mom & pups checked by your vet shortly after being born to pick up on any problems.
There are a ton of things that could have happened. I have to wonder why your not at the vets with the Dam having her checked out to see what wrong with her and having the pups necropsyed???
I’d have your vet go over her with a fine tooth comb before you ever think of breeding her again!

Could be a number of reasons. And it is really only your vet that could pinpoint which one. So it would be best to let him/her examine your bi tch.
It could be that she picked up an infection during her pregnancy. Or it could be an infection (STD) picked up from the dog you mated her to. This can happen if the stud dog owner is not careful about hygene, screening the bi tches brought to their dog or over using him.
If it is an STD your bi tch has, then it has to be treated, and can take a long time to clear. If not you will be faced with the same situation every time you mate her, and she will pass the STD onto whatever dog you use. He will in turn pass it on to other bi tches.

well, did you get the bi.tch health checked before you bred her? If not, then there could have been something wrong with her that caused the pups to have something wrong with them that started making them weak and die, if not dead already. My suggestion is, is not to breed her again. The way it seems, it will probably happen again the second time. The best thing you could do is get her spayed.

The average litter for a dalmatian is anywhere from 8-12, 6-8 is a good size for a first timer, but don’t be worried about litter size dalmatians have had 3 & even 1 pup in a litter, theres a lot of reasons for this like AI (Artificial insemination), not mated on the right day etc.
Sounds the first pup was a still born, but the other two could of had fading puppy syndrome, pups with this syndrome seem healthy & eager to feed etc but start to get really weak & not want to nurse, causing them to go down hill fast & die, if one puppy gets it then the whole litter is at risk.
Go to your vets & get your bitch checked out, see what your vet thinks as it could very well be something else ie STD, hereditry problems, unhealthy dam, dam &/or sire poor specimens of the breed, infections, age of the bitch (if bred too young could cause problems, if bred to old could cause problems) etc, etc.
Lastly, if she was sold to you as a pet there was a good reason for that, she was not of the showing/breeding quality & there for should not of been breed. You should have done your homework before you even considered breeding, as soon as she came in season she should of been health tested (bloods, the works), & within the first 24-48 hours after giving birth you should of taken her & the pups to the vets to make sure everyone’s healthy & she doen’t have anymore pups or a retained placenta still inside.
If she is a show dog though speak to your breeder & vet, only the vet can tell you what really happened (if you have the bodies of the pups take them to so the vet can do an ortopsy on them).
