I have a dalmation for the last six years that I adopted for a shelter. Although she wasn't the easiest dog to train aka she's a little headstrong with a very high energy level, i wouldn't reccomend one for a beginnner espeically if they had no dog experience or are a couch potato. I would suggest a lab instead as they are easier to train but they also have similar exercise needs. Dalmations need a gentle firm hand and very consistant rules and alot of training and socialization as they are prone to being nervous or highstrung. If you are absolutely sure that a dalmation is right for you, may I suggest an older one as they will bond just as strongly to you as a puppy but are a lot easier to live with as some may come already partially trained (mine was 3.5 yrs old when I got her).

Oh come on people is that what you have heard about them or do you have them? Well I have them and they were our first family dog they are not very popular my advice is that you get it as a puppy best if it was in small litter and make it your first dog if it is older they are very nice that way don't get one to much older if you get to at the same time they get very attached they are protective of their owners great guard dog that’s what they use them for in Italy. Their easy to train if puppy follow this and you have a perfect Dal!

Any dog is easy to train provided you satisfy the dogs needs and drives appropriately. Dalmations are high energy dogs that need a lot of exercise. If they do not get appropriate amounts of exercise they will loose focus when it comes to training.

Most Dalmations are born deaf. I got a dalmation named her Daisy. She was a very good dog no problem to potty train. She stayed inside most of the time. She loved thunder storms and she liked sleeping on my pillow above my head. She was deaf and she watched my every move. She liked watching TV but she layed always touching me. If you decide to get a Dalmation, please have the dog checked for deafness. Then you will know how to relate. Good Luck

no i would not recommend a dalmation for a beginner i don't know about how easy they are to train but whatever breed you go for i would recommend you look into the breeds requirements before hand and a find Good obedience school that does puppy classes as they will need socilaing. if you are looking for a good beginner dog i would recommend a collie, lab, gsd if you want a med to lge dog or how about a cross breed from a kennels

Dalmations can be a handful. they are great dogs, however, they are very high energy, and can be very stubborn.

For a first time dog owner, if you get into training (puppy kindergarten or basic obedience) as soon as you get the dog, it can work. However, know that you will need a lot of patience and a lot of physical stamina to work with a dalmation.

I have been told that a Dalmatian isn't for a beginner, however, if you take responsibility and take him to classes and are consistent with training, listen to your trainer and educate yourself, you can own a Dalmatian as a first time dog owner. Learn about the breed and educate yourself and be dedicated in training one.

No. And they are known for all kinds of genetic deficiences that cause terrible, sometimes fatal, health conditions and HUGE vet bills. For the avid Dalmation fan, this is just a side effect...for the average pet owner, it's a nighmare.

The movie 101 Dalmations did a lot of damage to this breed. Everyone wanted one and less then reputable breeders overbred the animals...now many have unstable dispostions and health problems.

They are not hard to train...I grew up training them but I would not recommend them for a big family or someone with small kids they can be very 'snappy' and unpredictable in that sense.
